For many, the coffee machine is the focal point of the kitchen, producing the beverage that helps them start their day off on the right foot. But what do today’s customers really want when they buy a coffee machine?

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the latest insights from the coffee industry generated from Revuze’s consumer insights platform. To obtain these insights, we analyzed review data from the UK, Germany, and France across leading retailers like Amazon, Currys, Mediamarkt, Darty, and more. Let’s dive in.

Leading Coffee Machine Brands in 2022

Which brands resonated most with coffee machine buyers last year? According to our research, in 2022, Delonghi was the most discussed coffee machine brand overall, with 9,085 reviews and a 76% positive sentiment. Tassimo and Siemens were tied for the most liked brand with 81% positive sentiment, with Melitta coming in at a close second with 80% positive sentiment.

Interestingly, German coffee lovers have the highest overall positive sentiment for coffee machines, with 79%, compared to the UK’s 70%.

What about taste? Germans are quite fond of the flavor of coffee, with a positive sentiment of 86%. Britons and French people, though? Not quite as much, with 72% and 70% sentiment, respectively.

A Decline in Discussion Volume and Sentiment

Coffee is always popular, but what about coffee machines? Our research found that, in 2022, the coffee machine category saw a decline of 29% year over year when it comes to discussion volume, and a 2-point decline in sentiment across the board. This means that, not only are people talking about coffee machines less, but they’re being slightly less positive about it than they were before.

But don’t worry, not all is doom and gloom. L’or drove a 54% volume increase in the capsule Appliances hierarchy. And new coffee machines from Siemens (EQ700) and Delonghi (Magnifica Start) hit the ground running with a positive sentiment of 87% and 85%, respectively.

What Customers Really Want

You can learn a lot by seeing which subjects people talk about most in their reviews. The topics that experienced the highest share of discussion growth between 2022 and 2021 were price/value for money (VFM), performance, and coffee filters. This means that, when it comes to coffee machines, consumers are most interested in value, how well a machine performs, and the coffee filter feature in particular.

In terms of trending topics, ease of use, price/VFM, and taste were the most discussed topics related to coffee machines overall, with a volume of 12,090, 8,950, and 8,294, respectively.

What about the things that people were less interested in talking about? Well, when it comes to the least discussed topics, water reservoir, features, and brewing speed, all had a volume of roughly 3,000 reviews.
